Touring Readiness Program

in partnership with manitoba arts network

The 12 online zoom sessions will be facilitated by critically-acclaimed theatre artist Stephanie Morin-Robert (currently on a 2-month tour). Known for Blindside and Eye Candy.

The Touring Readiness Program, provided by SATP & MAN, is designed to get your production ready to hit the road. Led by critically-acclaimed theatre artist Stephanie Morin-Robert, three Manitoba and three Saskatchewan theatre artists will build a toolkit of skills including how to showcase & network, how to pitch your show, touring on the road or digitally, and more. Spread over six months, you will get one-on-one training with Stephanie as well as group sessions with the other participants to learn from each other. The program will culminate in the professional filming of your production before a live audience in either Saskatoon, Regina, or Winnipeg (depending on your location).

This program is funded in part by Creative Saskatchewan.

  • This program is intended for smaller theatre companies and independent theatre shows (including Fringe theatre) with up to five actors, using minimal sets and lighting, and with an ideal show length of 60-90 minutes.

  • The 12 online sessions and one-on-ones will be scheduled from September 2022 to February 2023.

  • Intros - Getting to know you

The program will begin with individual meetings so that the facilitator, Stephanie Morin-Robert, can get to know each participant and their needs to set the scene for the whole program.

    Group Sessions

Stephanie will lead 12 group online webinars/workshops, once a week for 12 weeks, 90 minutes each. There will also be guest speakers brought in to speak on key topics.

    One-on-Ones

Once the group training is complete each participant will receive two, one-on-one one-hour sessions (catered training). There would be time in between each session for the participant to do some homework and then get feedback at the second and final one-on-one session.

    Performance Recording

In order to pitch or apply to showcases you will need video, so we will pay for the venues and technicians to professionally record your full length show. You will have a full day in the venue to do this and you will also get professional photos. Participants will be required to cover  expenses relating to actors, props, costumes, sets, makeup etc. Saskatchewan participants will record in either Saskatoon or Regina and Manitoba participants in Winnipeg. (Manitoba participants, this component is pending funding from Canada Council).

  • You will have showcase ready clips so that you can apply to Showcases across Canada and internationally.

You will know of all the applications and conferences and be ready to apply when applications open in February.

You will have video footage ready to have a profile on The Pitch - online performing arts marketplace connecting artists to buyers

The Manitoba Arts Network will connect you with other provincial networks.

MB Showcase - annual booking & networking conference participants will be offered a Showcase spot over future years starting in MB Showcase 2023. MB Arts Network will work to block book your show with any resulting interest.

  • Touring is when a theatre company wants to get their show booked for a tour of consecutive show dates within a given province (a tour could consist of 3-10 performances scheduled consecutively all in different communities). In some provinces such as Manitoba the provincial network acts as a liaison between the artist and communities/presenters/buyers to coordinate or block book the tour dates and negotiate contracts).

Touring is an industry valued at over 4 million in Canada. The majority of touring artists that are booked are musicians; theatre is desired but there aren’t a lot of shows showcasing (opportunity). There are networks in each province across Canada that produce an annual conference that showcase multidisciplinary artists. A showcase is on stage with full lighting and sound in front of an audience of presenters/buyers. The artist performs for 15-20 minutes which gives the presenters/buyers an idea of what they would be buying.

Following a showcase there is opportunity for artists to speak directly to the buyers to try to sell their show. Following the conference, within each province, 100’s of performances are booked as a direct result of these showcases. Presenters/buyers offer full negotiated artist fees for shows which can range from $1500 - $10,000 per show depending on location, size of venue and size of cast.

  • Application for this program are now closed. Thank you to all that have applied. Stay tuned for the next iteration of this program in the future.

2022-2023 Program Participants

David Sealy & Thrasher Productions - “The Weavers

David Sealy's short fiction, monologs, and poems have been featured in journals and anthologies. These days he's focused on playwriting. His piece I Married a Dishrag won the Short Grain Dramatic Monolog. A longer version of this play was subsequently workshopped in Calgary as part of the Petro Canada Stage One series. Three of his short plays were part of Regina's Globe Theatre's Sandbox series. His comedy-adventure-romance The Bob Shivery Show was produced at Lunchbox Theatre in Calgary. His play The Weavers won the City of Regina Writing Award and was part of On Cue Performance Hub's Test Drive season in 2022.

The Weavers is the story of two outsiders who like to think big. Ida Red (F 80) is cantankerous, driven, and a habitual schemer. Nathan (M 28) shows up at Ida's ramshackle farm house in the middle of a blizzard. He's conflicted, with a tinge of melancholy. As the wind howls outside they jockey for position to see who's going to come out on top.

[I want to learn] how to get the show on the road! I hope to become a knowledgeable producer and learn how to promote, network, and access support.

Jessica Gares & TAi Reign - “lift/break”

Jessica Gares is a film and theatre maker from Treaty 4 Territory(Regina). She grew up a competitive dancer, which sparked a love for the performing arts. She attended Vancouver Film School’s Acting for Film and Television Program in 2011/2012, before relocating to Toronto to continue her training and audition professionally. Next along her journey, Jessica moved to London, UK where she co-founded the Odds and Ends Theatre company and produced fringe theatre. She came back home for her directorial debut in theatre with Shoulderbirds Productions, directing Five Women Wearing the Same Dress by Alan Ball for Saskatchewan Theatrefest 2019. She returned to Europe, and was assistant directing an original play with the Orange Theatre Company in Amsterdam when the pandemic broke out, and she made the decision to return home. Her current focus is to create socially relevant work that connects the people of this province and beyond.

Tai Reign is a Two-Spirited poet from Peepeekisis Cree Nation raised in Regina, Sk. They first discovered poetry as a therapeutic outlet, since they’ve realized how powerful words can be. Now they use poetry to share their experiences, world view and make sense of the hardships they’ve experienced.

lift/break is a new devised theatre piece by Jessica Gares and Tai Reign. The show explores the relationship between Indigenous and settler youth in urban Saskatchewan, addressing the subtle and not-so-subtle racism that happens behind closed doors, even when people have the best of intentions.

This show was born out of a need to acknowledge the issues Indigenous people still face in this province and this country. After performing the show to a diverse audience, it was evident that it connected with people and created conversations. We are most hoping to share lift/break with a wider audience, and continue the conversation that has been started.

I am really enjoying connecting with other artists and generating new strategies for peer support and reciprocity.

An ensemble of artists who practice open hearted presence with one another and their practice are aerodynamic. I look forward to further touring my work outside the region and, through cooperation, making the pathways to touring easier and breezier for my fellow artists.

I hope to strengthen the sector’s dialogue with Creative Saskatchewan. I feel Creative Saskatchewan has a desire to better support the performing arts sector - specifically dance and theatre. I feel more dialogue is required to make sure that the funding programs available are congruent with the way new work in dance and theatre is being generated - allowing the idiosyncrasies of these disciplines to shine.
