TheatreCon 2025: Call for Session Proposals

February 15, 2025 SATP Admin

After the success of the inaugural TheatreCon in 2023, the Saskatchewan Association of Theatre Professionals (SATP) is thrilled to once again host a conference for theatre and live performance folk. This conference, conceptualized and organized by the SATP, with funding support from Creative Saskatchewan, will feature numerous activities and events taking place on Treaty Four territory in and around the Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Regina.

This year the theme for TheatreCon is BTS - Behind the Stage. There are a lot of details behind the magic of theatre that public audiences don’t see - the often unaddressed practical aspects, the technical and production facets, and the strategies artists use to support their personal health and wellness in an industry that is all about extremes.

How do you write grants to secure funding for that show you've always wanted to produce? How do you file taxes as an independent artist or producer? How does your theatre plan and program shows that audiences will want to attend? How do you make a website or portfolio that is clean and easy to access yet still shows off your creative skills? How do you support artists in a safe, healthy, and equitable way through long tech hours? There are so many areas you have to be an "expert" in that it can be overwhelming. This conference will explore a few of these questions and more to help you continue to fill your pack of skills to thrive in the prairie theatre industry.

Whether your focus is on a career-building capacity or a creative discipline, we'd love to talk to you about how your presentation or workshop could be part of an enabling and inspiring conference for our members.

All presenters will be compensated and will be registered as a TheatreCon participant at no charge.

Please note that the sessions/workshops will be presented on June 6th or 7th, 2025 in person in Regina, SK.

To propose your presentation or workshop, please fill out this form and provide:

  • A bio of roughly 100 words summarizing your relevant vocational or life experience;

  • A one or two-paragraph summary of your proposed presentation or workshop, including capacity/learning objectives for participants, if relevant; and

  • Location, technical, support, and scheduling requirements. Ex. length of time required for the session, any specific environmental or audio-visual needs, etc.

We will accept presentation proposals until 11:59 pm CST on Saturday, March 15, 2025.

If you have any questions, please email judiths@sasktheatreprofessionals.ca

Can't wait to hear from you!

Announcing TheatreCon 2025!

TheatreCon 2025
BTS: Behind the Stage

June 5-8, 2025 | Regina

After the success of the inaugural TheatreCon in 2023, SATP is thrilled to once again this year host a conference for theatre folk. This conference is for SATP members (and soon-to-be SATP members), including but not limited to theatre makers, arts administrators, theatre educators, students, and creatives.

How do you make a living in theatre, really?

Over the course of the weekend, attendees will attend guided sessions, hands-on workshops, and community conversations, as well as a variety of other sessions intended to engage and inform. There will be opportunities to connect with fellow artists, see a show (TBA), and build community.

SATP Wishes you all Happy Holidays!

December 19, 2022 SATP Admin

Dear friends and supporters,

As we near the day our planet starts tilting toward the sun again, many of us are preparing for some time to breathe deep, slow down, and huddle up with family and dear friends. With a new calendar year nearly upon us, it's a natural time to thank you for your engagement and support in 2022.

This year saw the live performing arts begin a halting, tentative return to activity after more than two years of pandemic-prompted shutdown. We remain a long way from 'all systems go'  -- and that's okay, because in the interim we have come to understand that some of those systems are in dire need of an overhaul.

We move into the next year with questions that go far beyond 'When will audiences come back?" and move into how we will practice our art and vocation so as to contribute to a more just, inclusive, and compassionate world ... or, at the very least, so as not to continue contributing to unjust, oppressive, exclusionary practices and paradigms.

To that end, SATP has continued to partner with Cultural Pluralism in the Arts Movement Ontario (CPAMO) in facilitating a cohort of theatres/producing companies/arts organizations in Saskatchewan and beyond, supporting each other in developing action plans for a theatre sector that is safe, welcoming, inclusive, and reflective of the diversity in our communities.

We embarked on the second iteration of our Professional Theatre Mentorship Program, supporting artists working with mentors to develop their skills in directing, playwriting, arts management, and other disciplines.
We were delighted to partner with the Manitoba Arts Network on a new Touring Readiness Program, in which four Saskatchewan and three Manitoba artists work with international touring performer/deviser Stephanie Morin-Robert on getting their own projects ready to pitch and hit the road.

We launched two e-newsletters, one focused on upcoming productions (available for both our members and community), and the other on current and upcoming career/development opportunities such as gigs, workshops, funding, etc (available for members).  With these regular communications landing in your inbox twice every month, you can feel confident you're not missing out on important opportunities to grow as a practitioner, pursue a project, or catch some great theatre.

And we're so excited about our latest initiative, SATP's Green Room, a safe, supportive online community for all members, in which we can chat about the biz, cheer each other on, seek advice and information, post about our projects, or just hang out. Our hope is that the Green Room will become a favourite destination for you whenever you need information, perspective, support, or somewhere to toot your own horn!

We're looking to 2023 with renewed hope. And we're so very grateful to be supporting the art and the work of Saskatchewan's live performing arts practitioners.

Happiest of holidays, everyone.
Your biggest fans,
Mark & Judith at SATP
