Directing Workshop for Women

Directing Workshop for Women

Over six three-hour classes this workshop, hosted by Johnna Wright, will look at the fundamentals of directing for the stage:  script interpretation, preparation, working with designers, casting, staging, and working with actors.   Through all of this we will also talk about how all aspects of the director’s role might be undertaken by a female director, and how a female director might be seen by the rest of the team.  Is there a ‘female approach’?  Do some theatre artists respond differently to a female at the helm?  And if so, how should we respond?

Johnna Wright's past credits include Prairie Nurse (Station Arts Centre), Pride & Prejudice (Persephone Theatre), A Christmas Carol and The Gravitational Pull of Bernice Trimble (Persephone), The Taming of the Shrew (Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan), and The (Post) Mistress (Gordon Tootoosis Nīkānīwin Theatre). She has also directed for Bard on the Beach and Blackbird Theatre (Vancouver), Gateway Theatre (Richmond), and Drayton Entertainment (Ontario), among others.  Johnna has received two Jessie Awards and a SATAward for Outstanding Direction, and was nominated for the Outstanding Performance SATAward after appearing in Les Liaisons Dangereuses for Theatre Naught.
